This private tour is tailored to your comfort level, and your guide coaches you and adapts each climb to your progress. Whether it is your first time on ice or your first time posing with an ice axe, you leave with new skills and photos to remember it.
Your tour begins at Skaftafell Airport Terminal, in Vatnajokull National Park.
From here, you board a 4x4 vehicle and set off across a glacial plain. About 10 minutes into the drive, you leave the paved road and continue on an F-road for 20 to 30 minutes. Along the way, your guide tells you about the history and geology of the region.
At the glacier parking area, your guide hands out all the gear you need: crampons, helmets, harnesses, ice axes, and hiking boots if you rented them. A 30-minute hike over slightly rocky but mostly flat terrain brings you to the edge of Falljokull Glacier.
On the glacier, your guide teaches you how to walk on ice and shows you a basic climbing technique called front-pointing. You test your new skills on a gentle climbing wall. Once you're ready, you move on to bigger challenges, such as tall vertical ice walls or deep glacial holes.
Throughout the experience, a professional photographer takes candid and action shots, so you can stay focused on the climb. The blue ice formations of Falljokull Glacier make a striking backdrop for portraits and climbing photos.
After your climbs, you hike back to the vehicle and drive back to the parking lot.
After the tour, your photographer lets you choose your favorite shots of the day, and you can buy extra photos. Expect a mix of portraits, action shots, and landscapes.
