See puffins up close on this boat tour from Reykjavik's Old Harbor, a short, family-friendly trip that's easy to fit around other plans.
You board Skulaskeid, a boat with a shallow draft designed to get close to the islands, at the Old Harbor next to downtown Reykjavik.
On the way out, you see Reykjavik from the sea, and your guide points out buildings and islands along the way.
About 30,000 puffins nest on the islands off Reykjavik, and the boat reaches them in about 15 minutes. You usually visit Akurey Island, or Lundey Island depending on the weather. Both islands have rocky shores, small hills, and plenty of birdlife.
When you arrive, the engine is turned off so you can watch the birds quietly. Besides puffins, you may see northern fulmars, Arctic terns, and black guillemots. Binoculars are available on board.
Puffins are easy to recognize by their colorful beaks and black-and-white feathers. They spend most of their lives at sea and come to land to breed and raise their chicks.
A guide tells you about the puffins, other wildlife, and the surrounding nature, and answers your questions.
After about half an hour at the island, you return to Reykjavik's Old Harbor.
