Explore the landscapes of Skagafjordur in North Iceland on horseback on this riding tour, with rivers, mountains, meadows, and waterfalls.
The tour departs from the operator's base in Varmahlid, next to the Ring Road and about 15.7 miles (25.3 kilometers) south of Saudarkrokur. Here, you meet your guide and the horse you ride on the tour.
No riding skills are needed. The route depends on your riding experience, from calm, scenic trails for beginners to more challenging terrain and longer stretches of tolt for experienced riders.
The Icelandic horse was brought to Iceland by the first settlers over a thousand years ago and has been kept apart from other breeds ever since, so it has kept its unique characteristics.
Icelandic horses are known for their gentle nature, sure-footedness, and their special gaits, the tolt and the flying pace, which give you a smooth ride even over uneven ground.
The route may take you along country trails to Reykjafoss Waterfall, where mist rises from the falling water.
Depending on the route, you may cross rivers on horseback, as the horses walk calmly through the cool water.
You may also ride into the wide landscapes of the Heradsvotn river delta, where, depending on the season, you may watch birds or pick crowberries during a short break. The open ground is good for trying the tolt.
Along the way, you ride through meadows crossed by winding rivers, with mountains all around, while your guide tells you about the land, the horses, and the bond between Icelanders and their horses.
At the end of the ride, you return to the base.
