Summary
Description
Join an incredible wetsuit snorkelling tour in one of the most fascinating locations imaginable, between continents. This tour is excellent for those who want an added thrill when visiting Iceland.
You will start by meeting your guides at the location of the tour, the famous Silfra fissure. This part of Iceland was voted number 15 in the top snorkel and dive sites in the world.
Silfra’s name translates to ‘silver.’ It got its name from the fact that it is filled with crystal clear water that sparkles like silver in the sunlight.
The Silfra fissure is the meeting point of the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. It is here that the two plates are slowly drifting apart. As the plates began drifting millennia ago, the space between them began to get broader and deeper. Through the ages, water from Langjökull glacier started to travel 60 km south. On its journey, each drop of this water spent at least a hundred years being filtered through lava rock. The result today is a fascinating underwater world with visibility of up to 100 m (33 ft).
Before you enter the water, you will be fitted with a wetsuit and given a safety briefing by your guide. Your guide will also be able to tell you more about how the fissure was formed, what to expect when you’re in the water and the Thingvellir National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) that Silfra sits in.
Once in the water, you will witness a true natural wonder. The clear waters hold underwater cliffs and incredible colours. The entire time you are in the water, you will be swimming between the continents. This is undoubtedly an incredible afternoon.
Wetsuits provide much more freedom of movement when compared to drysuits. The wetsuits used in this tour are 6 mm in thickness, which isolates the body from the cold water.
Some water will always get into a wetsuit, but the temperature of Silfra is a consistent 2–4 °C (36–39 °F) all year round. The water inside the wetsuit quickly warms up from your body temperature, meaning your swim will be comfortable. Wetsuits also make it possible to dive and swim deeper, rather than floating just on the surface when wearing a drysuit.
You need to bring a bathing suit to wear underneath your wetsuit as you will get wet.
