Combine two Icelandic adventures in one day by snorkeling and horseback riding. This tour suits travelers who want to fill their vacation with activities.
Your day starts when your local guide picks you up and takes you to Thingvellir National Park, one of Iceland's three national parks. The valley is known for its history as the site of Iceland's old parliament, its landscapes of lava, woodland, and waterways, its position between two tectonic plates, and Silfra Fissure, one of the best-known snorkeling sites in the world.
You park near Silfra Fissure, a ravine filled with spring water, where your guide briefs you on the snorkel and the equipment. If you would rather stay dry, warm, and easily afloat, you are helped into a drysuit; if you would rather free-dive and have more flexibility, you can wear a wetsuit. You then pick up your mask and fins and head to the entrance.
As soon as you put your face in the water, you see how clear it is. Visibility in Silfra Fissure is about 328 feet (100 meters), and you see the deep blue colors and underwater geology between the tectonic plates. As you drift along on a gentle current, one of the guides dives beneath you and takes photos for you to bring home.
Once you've snorkeled through the sections known as the corridors, the cathedral, and the lagoon, you return to the base to change back into your normal clothes.
When your group is ready, you are driven back toward Reykjavik for the horseback riding part of the day.
At the stables, you meet your horse. Icelandic horses are gentle, curious, and intelligent, and their small size makes them easy to ride. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced rider, your guide looks after you as you explore the area.
The ride follows a path through a scenic valley in the countryside, across rivers, and up to viewpoints such as Trollafoss Waterfall. After about two hours of riding (1.5 hours in winter), perhaps trying out the tolt, the special gait of the Icelandic horse, you return to the stables. Your guide then takes you back to Reykjavik.
