Description

Put on your hiking boots and join this wonderful hike on one of the most beautiful peaks in Iceland, Snæfellsjökull glacier. This tour is perfect for those who would like to spend a day hiking a famous mountain under the supervision of a local expert guide.

Snæfellsjökull is located on Snæfellsnes peninsula in the West of Iceland; it is a glacier-covered volcano that rises 1446-metres above sea level. This glacier summit is one of the most beautiful peaks in Iceland with stunning views over the peninsula and on clear days, towards Reykjavík and the Westfjords.

If you opted for a paid pick-up from Reykjavík, you will be collected from your accommodation at the stated time. Otherwise, you can make your own way to the town of Arnarstapi to meet your group. The hike from the base of the glacier to the summit takes about 5-6-hours. Starting from the road, your party will hike through rock and gravel paths for approximately 1-hour to get to the base of the glacier.

At this point, there will be a break to put on glacier gear which includes crampons, a harness, an ice axe and ropes. Your guides will show you how each element works as well as how to use your equipment. It’s also an excellent spot for some snacks and refreshments.

You will then hike for about 3 hours to reach the summit of Snæfellsjökull. On your way up, you will also see different glacial features such as crevasses which your guide will point out and explain. The hike is not challenging but some physical activity is required so its suitable for most people.

At the 1400-metre mark, most people consider it a comfortable spot to take a break and appreciate the view before descending back down the mountain. It is, however, possible to complete the 1446-metres to the top of the mountain should the group be eager to do so with the help of ropes as the slope to the summit is very steep.

At either mark, there will be a break to eat lunch and to take in the astonishing views. You will follow the same trail back down which usually take 1-2-hours to get back to the base where you will remove your glacier gear and head back to the car.

Climb one of Iceland's most beautiful yet, accessible peaks on this exciting glacier hike tour. Check availability by choosing a date.
