Description
Snorkel in a wetsuit between two continents at Silfra Fissure in Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Silfra lies in the rift between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, which drift apart about 0.8 inches (2 centimeters) a year. Glacial meltwater filters through volcanic rock for about 30 years before rising into the fissure, giving visibility of about 328 feet (100 meters). Silfra is ranked among the clearest waters in the world.
The water stays at about 35 to 39 degrees Fahrenheit (2 to 4 degrees Celsius) all year. The full-body wetsuit won't keep you completely warm, but it does a good job of keeping you relatively warm.
Unlike a drysuit, which keeps you floating on the surface, a wetsuit lets you dive a little below the surface for a closer look. Because of the cold, this tour is best for more adventurous swimmers. If you'd rather stay warm and dry, choose a drysuit tour instead.
You snorkel in Silfra with your guide. Afterward, you warm up with hot chocolate.
