Description
Discover the frozen landscapes of Iceland by joining this small-group glacier hike on Solheimajokull, an outlet of the mighty Myrdalsjokull Ice Cap. This 3-hour experience is perfect for travelers eager to explore blue ice formations, learn about glacial geology, and walk safely across a living glacier with an expert guide.
Your adventure begins at the parking lot of Solheimajokull Glacier. This meeting point, roughly 2.5 hours from Reykjavik, is easily accessible via GPS and online maps on the South Coast of Iceland.
Here, your certified glacier guide will greet the group and provide all the necessary equipment. Crampons, helmets, harnesses, and ice axes are included, along with a safety briefing and instruction on how to move confidently on the ice.
Before stepping onto the glacier, you will receive an overview of its formation, characteristics, and how it connects to Iceland's volcanic and glacial systems.
As the tour continues, you will begin your hike across the icy surface, following your guide along a carefully chosen route. Along the way, you will encounter features such as deep crevasses, sinkholes, moulins, and ridges sculpted by centuries of movement and pressure.
Solheimajokull's ever-changing surface reveals a mix of brilliant whites, glassy blues, and dark ash layers shaped by volcanic eruptions and weather conditions.
Throughout the hike, your guide will share insights into the glacier’s geology, the history of Myrdalsjokull, and the effects of climate change on Iceland’s frozen terrain. These stories bring the landscape to life and help visitors better understand the forces shaping it.
Scenic stops along the route offer time to take photos and enjoy panoramic views over the surrounding mountains, valleys, and coast. You may even glimpse the Katla Volcano beneath the ice, one of Iceland’s most powerful subglacial volcanoes.
Group size is limited to 12 people to ensure a safer, more personal experience and to minimize environmental impact. This low-impact approach supports long-term sustainability while allowing for meaningful interactions with your guide and the landscape. Smaller groups also help maintain a quiet, immersive experience in this striking natural setting.
The hike is easy to moderately demanding and suitable for those in good health with basic walking ability. No prior glacier experience is needed, but participants should be prepared for uneven, icy terrain and varying weather conditions.
Proper clothing, including waterproof layers and sturdy footwear, is strongly recommended.
The tour finishes back at the parking lot of Solheimajokull, where you can continue your South Coast exploration independently.
