Add a little twist to your holiday with an exhilarating hike on top of a glacier. This tour will take you across the vast ice cap of Sólheimajökull glacier, past deep crevasses, freezing water cauldrons, and blue ice sculptures. It is the perfect tour for those traveling the South Coast and want to experience the sheer power of the Icelandic nature.

At the parking lot of Sólheimajökull glacier, you will meet your local glacier guide who will start by introducing you to your environment. Sólheimajökull is an outlet glacier of the larger Mýrdalsjökull which is located directly on top of Mt. Katla, Iceland’s most powerful volcano. A short distance west is the infamous Eyjafjallajökull glacier volcano which last erupted in 2010.

After a 15-minute walk to the glacier itself, you will be fitted with all safety gear necessary for a hike on the ice, like crampons and an ice axe. Don’t worry; no prior experience is needed, your expert guide will teach you all how to use this equipment.

Then there is nothing left except to ascend the glacier. Your guide will lead you first past ash covered peaks, the aftermath of past eruptions of nearby volcanoes. You will then reach the pearly white surface of the glacier, but underneath is electric blue ice. You will be able to witness the colors of the glacier as you look down one of its bottomless crevasses, where bright blue ice turns pure white and then jet black.

On the top of the glacier, you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular panoramic view of mountains, valleys, and the vast ice cap. You will marvel at the size of the glacier and hear nothing but the rustling sound of the ice as your crampons rub against it.

Don’t miss out on this excellent introduction to Iceland. Grab your hiking boots and breath in the fresh mountain air on the top of a glacier. Check availability by choosing a date.

Steff was a great guide. She engaged everyone in conversation, gave lots of interesting information about the glacier and the effect climate change is having. She paced the hike so the group could stay together.

This was a most amazing tour. We arrived and was kitted out with crampons and ice axe. And set of with our guide Ben who was incredible. Informative and funny we had a great 3 1/2 hours being guided across and around the glacier, finding interesting features such as an ice tube and a canyon we had a look around. I would highly recommend this trip.

This was the highlight of our time in Iceland. Highly recommend!! Our guide, Kate was very knowledgable and make sure we were safe the entire time. We had a small tour group so we were able to see a lot of the glacier. Overall an amazing experience!

I ended up being the only one who signed up for the 10am tour, so that was pretty awesome. Other than the rain, it was really amazing being able to climb up onto the glacier and see all the ice formations.

We had a fantastic time on our glacier hike. Easily our favorite part of the trip - our guide was knowledgeable and personable. He made sure to take a good amount of breaks & point out cool features as we passed on the glacier. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a little adventure!

We absolutely loved our glacier hike. We went in late November and lucked out with some dry and mild weather. The guide was amazing. We had done the crystal cave tour the day prior and were unsure if spending two days on a glacier would be worth our time, but we were very glad we went. Our tour guide told us a TON of information about the formation and constant shifting of the glaciers (stuff we had not learned on our other tour). As other have said, it's a MUST DO! FYI some of the other tours are cheaper but have much larger groups and therefore less personal experience. We only had 5 total people on our tour but we passed tours of as many as 25 people.

We loved our hike! The weather was rainy/drizzly but I think this is normal, especially for October, so we hiked onward. Our guide was fantastic. Very knowledgeable and helpful. The view is amazing! Its a must-see and must-do.

Amazing, the best tour during our Iceland trip. The guide (Ron?) is fantastic. He even took our group down to an ice cave, 11 of us one by one. The moment you see the ice cave, you feel like you live in a fairy tale. It's a 'Must Do'.
