Daily itinerary
Day 1 - From Reykjavik to the South Coast & Thorsmork
You'll be picked up at a time of your choosing. You can decide to be picked up from the city of Reykjavík or a town of the South Coast such as Hvolsvöllur, Hella, Selfoss or Vík. You can also decide to meet your friendly and local guide near the waterfall Gljúfrabúi on the South Coast.
After you've met your guide, your adventure will begin. In a Super Jeep, which is a large and custom vehicle built to handle Iceland's rough terrain, you will be transported to the area of Þórsmörk.
Today will be a day spent mostly on the road. On your way to your accommodation, you will enjoy several scenic stops, to awe at the powers of Eyjafjallajökull Glacier Volcano and the outlet glacier Gígjökull. Once you arrive at your destination, you will make camp at the mountain hut in Húsadalur, where you will stay the next two nights.
You will spend your first night in the well-equipped hut, gathering your strengths for the days ahead.
Day 2 - Exploring the Valley of Thor
After waking up to the crisp mountain air and having a nutritious breakfast, you will spend the day more extensively exploring the nature of Þórsmörk, going on drives and hikes along the best trails of the area in the company of your knowledgeable guide.
Þórsmörk is a stunning nature reserve and one of the most popular hiking areas in Iceland. See the glacier river Krossá cut through lush landscapes of birch, fern and moss, in this beautiful valley named after the most worshipped god of the Vikings.
You will spend another night at the mountain hut Húsadalur.
Day 3 - Golden Circle & Back to Reykjavik
It’s time to bid farewell to the valley of the thunder god and visit the crown jewels of Iceland, the sights of the Golden Circle. First up is Þingvellir National Park, located directly above the fissure zone of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where visible cracks and gorges give the already incredible volcanic scenery an otherworldly appeal.
Then, get ready to visit the geothermal valley Haukadalur, home to spouting geysers, bubbling mud pools and steaming hot vents. See Strokkur put on a regular display of boiling water erupting naturally from the ground, as high as 20 metres into the air, perfectly showcasing the powers at work beneath the Earth’s crust.
Your last stop will be one of the highlights of your trip, as you will visit the very namesake of the Golden Circle, Gullfoss Waterfall, plunging over 30 metres down two tiers into a grand canyon below. The King all waterfalls in Iceland is indeed a sight to behold, and the viewing platforms enable you to feel the falls’ cascading power rumbling beneath your feet.
After such an incredible sightseeing experience, you will return to Reykjavík City, no doubt still reeling from all the stunning natural sites you visited during the last days.
