Come along on a fantastic tour of the glacial peninsula of Snæfellsnes. See the diverse sights of the area before jumping into a snowcat to ride across the white expanse of Snæfellsjökull glacier. Those looking for an exciting adventure should not miss this excursion.

This fun-filled day tour departs from Snæfellsnes Peninsula. You will leave from the charming town of Grundarfjörður. This place is the home of the famous Krikjufell mountain also known as the ‘mountain shaped like an arrow’s head’ from HBO’s Game of Thrones.

You will board a vehicle that has been specially built to handle the rough glacial landscapes of Iceland. You will then travel to the magnificent Snæfellsjökull glacier. As you travel there will be plenty of sightseeing. The landscape of the Snæafellsnes peninsula is often referred to as Iceland in miniature due to the wide variety of mountains, lava fields, black sand beaches, mountains and ocean views.

At the base of Snæfellsjökull, you will change vehicles and hop onto a snowcat. This machine is designed to handle the ice and snow ahead and take you to your destination comfortably. You will ascend the white expanse of the glacier which sits on top of a 7000-year-old stratovolcano.

Snæfellsjökull is one of the most famous sites in Iceland, gaining international attention when Jules Verne made it the entryway to the centre of the earth in his classic sci-fi novel 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth'. The whole area is said to hold mystical energy and driving along the ice and lava promises to be a unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The feeling of standing on top of a glacier, which also sits above a mighty volcano is second to none. The incredible views from the top will provide fantastic photo opportunities and lasting memories.

So don't hesitate! Discover the mystical powers of the magnificent Snæfellsjökull glacier on this fantastic tour. Check availability by choosing a date.

The first thing was that we arrived for our tour only to be told that they weren't running them until the next day. Luckily, with the aid of the kind lady there who rang the ferry company, we were able to swap our days' plans around, thank goodness, as this tour was the main one we wanted to achieve and why we were staying in Stykkisholmur for the week. So, when we arrived the second time, we were greeted by our guide Hjalti, a jolly viking in a fun hat, and he drove us in the bus up as high as he could get it onto the mountain. From there we transferred to the Snowcat, which is an open topped vehicle, so come prepared for the weather! This beast chugged us up the glacier, very steep in places, past snowmobile tracks showing where the riders must have been almost vertical - crazy! Once we arrived at the top we were given some safety instructions and left to have a look around. I couldn't say for how long but it was plenty of time and we sat and ate our lunch up there too. The views were amazing because we were so very lucky to have a clear day and could see for miles in all directions. Then we did it all in reverse and were returned to base. Hjalti was very friendly and happy to take photos for you and with you. The cab of the snowcat is enclosed forward of where the passengers sit so there was no talking from him or to him whilst we travelled up the glacier. I was expecting more of a superjeep up to the snowcat than the bus that we had, but it was fine and got us there. This is a brilliant tour for the price and I am very glad we were able to juggle our plans to fit it in. I am not sure how the Guide to Iceland site allowed us to book a date and time when the company was not operational but perhaps they will look into that as I mentioned it to Regina Hronn, with whom I had been in touch thanks to her wonderful helpful travel blogs on the Snaefellsnes peninsula.
