Solheimajokull Glacier is one of the best-known sights on the South Coast, with blue ice, volcanic ash, and deep crevasses.
Your tour begins at the Solheimajokull Glacier parking lot in South Iceland, where your guide hands out your gear: crampons, a harness, a helmet with a headlamp, and rental hiking boots if you need them.
When everyone is ready, you walk about 40 minutes to the edge of the glacier. The trail is mostly flat but slightly rocky, and your guide sets a comfortable pace so you can enjoy the views.
Next, you step onto the ice and begin your glacier hike. As you climb, your guide points out ice formations, crevasses, and deep glacial holes called moulins, and tells you about the geology of the glacier.
The highlight is the glacier zipline. After a safety briefing, you clip into your harness and glide above the ice, with views of the glacier below and the landscape beyond.
After the zipline, you hike back off the glacier to the parking lot.
