Jump in the saddle for a long afternoon ride with the Icelandic horse. This tour is recommended for strong, experienced riders who are comfortable on horseback and able to be in control at all paces.

This tour is limited to 20 or fewer people to ensure that every person gets sufficient attention from your guide and is able to enjoy the surroundings as much as possible.

After being picked up at your accommodation in Reykjavik, you’ll join your tour group at the Riding Centre in the nearby countryside. If you like, you can start the afternoon with lunch at the stable. After learning a bit about the history of the Icelandic horses, you’ll be matched with a horse and will be ready to go.

You'll first cross the Kaldá river, one of the many glacial rivers in Iceland, which is popular among fishing enthusiasts. Next, your guide will choose a route which is easiest (and prettiest) for the weather and season. This is why no two horseback riding tours are the same.

One route will let you explore Helgafell, the so-called 'holy mountain' outside of Hafnarfjörður, a town built directly on top of lava fields.

On your way around this peak, ask your guide to point out the night trolls, three rock formations on top of a distant mountain. Supposedly, these three trolls journeyed to a nearby beach to fetch the meat of a whale who had washed ashore. After arguing all night with other trolls who had come to eat whale, these trolls were caught by the light of the morning sun and turned immediately to stone.

Alternatively, you may journey toward Heiðmörk, a gorgeous nature park where millions of trees have been planted in a community effort to restore Iceland’s woodlands. The most common tree here is the spruce, but wildflowers bloom in abundance, and many birds flock to the pools of water and lush vegetation.

Don't miss this chance to canter, trot, and tölt through the beautiful countryside on the back of an Icelandic horse. Check availability by choosing a date.

This was definitely the best horseback riding tour I've been on! It was the first time on the icelandic horse for me, and I loved it! A lot of tölting and cantering, which made the ride very exciting. The horses are very nice, strong and active, good temperament. And the scenery of course was amazing. I definitely recommend this tour!

I've been on a few horseback riding tours in Iceland and this was the best one! The weather agreed with us and it was nice and sunny, although it gets a little windy on the way so be sure to wear some warm layers. You can also get rain gear from Íshestar if it looks like it will rain. We rode into Heiðmörk, a beautiful area right by the city limits and since this tour is only for those with a bit of experience then we spent quite a long time galloping and cantering. Some slow walking as well since the trail both goes along a road with some car traffic and in parts it's small and crooked (the rollercoaster trail). The perfect amount of time for those with a bit more experience than a beginner's level, but still don't ride frequently. I would go back on this tour in a heartbeat!
