Description

Explore the impressive and diverse sites of west Iceland with this day tour from Reykjavík. This excursion is the perfect combination of sightseeing and history, and should not be missed by those wanting to immerse themselves in Icelandic culture.

The tour begins when you are picked up in the capital city in a small vehicle, which allows for a more personal and friendly experience unmatched by big buses. From here, you will set off north to the Borgarfjörður region, where waterfalls, hot springs, and historical sites await.

Your journey will first take you around ‘the Whale Fjord’, Hvalfjörður. This is a stunning, long bay, with verdant forest, countless waterfalls, and towering mountains. After enjoying this route, you will reach two of the most famous falls in the region, Hraunfossar and Barnafoss.

Hraunfossar is tranquil, trickling in many rivulets from a vast lava field. Just a few minutes walk away; you will notice that Barnafoss contrasts with it greatly as it thunders ominously down a narrow canyon.

You will then head to the highest-flowing hot-spring in Europe, Deildartunguhver. Here, you can walk along wooden platforms to admire where the water and mud boil to the surface in pools, marvelling over its scale and the forces of Iceland’s geothermal activity.

You will get to see how this geothermal energy is harnessed with your next stop, at the Kleppjárnsreykir greenhouses. The majority of the produce in Iceland is grown in greenhouses like this, with even the winter darkness and cold being no impediment.

The next stop is another cultural one. You will head to Reykholt, a scenic village with a long history. It was here where the legendary medieval writer, historian and chieftain Snorri Sturluson compiled his famous works such as Edda. Without his writings, we would know very little of the Old Norse beliefs, nor the lineages of many European monarchs.

Before you head back to Reykjavík, you stop in Borgarnes, another historic town. Here, you can visit the Settlement  Centre, a museum dedicated to recreating Iceland's earliest days. There, you will learn how this country went from an inhabited island to a nation under one of the world’s first parliaments.

Get to know Iceland through both nature and culture with this fantastic tour of west Iceland. Check availability by choosing a date.
