Description
Get to know some of the largest inhabitants of Iceland with this amazing combo tour! You will be able to explore the Whales of Iceland Exhibition and go on a whale watching tour from Reykjavík. This is an excellent tour for wildlife enthusiasts and anyone passionate about whales.
Choose to begin your adventure either by visiting the Whales of Iceland Exhibition or by taking your whale watching tour. For the whale watching, you can choose to be picked up from your accomodation or meet on location (pick-up is available for an additional fee). The whale watching tours depart from the Old Harbour in downtown Reykjavík. The Whales of Iceland Exhibition is located in the Grandi area, a short walk from the Old Harbour.
The Whales of Iceland Exhibition features 23 life-size, hand-made models of all of the different whale species that have been found in Icelandic waters. Enjoy seeing just how big these giants of the sea actually are (and how small we are in comparison).
The exhibit features interactive technology stations, audio guides available in 12+ languages, a free guided tour every day at 10:30 and 13:30 (in English), and screenings of the award winning film Sonic Sea at 11:00 and 15:00. You will learn all about the marine mammals surrounding Iceland, and about the various threats (and their solutions) that they face. After touring the exhibition you can grab a drink and snack in our whale cafe, read one of the many books that are available and check out our plastic free gift shop. Whales of Iceland is a dreamy adventure for the whole family and a wonderful way to supplement your whale watching tour to learn even more.
The second part of this tour takes you to the Old Harbour - a quick and easy walk from the Exhibition. Join an expert guide to sail out into beautiful Faxaflói Bay to search for some of the most commonly spotted species: minke whales, humpback whales, white-beaked dolphins and harbour porpoises.
The Classic Tour is 3-3.5 hours in duration and has an educational and interactive focus on board. You can look at whale bones and teeth, baleen plates and even investigate sea specimens under a microscope when the weather allows. Your guide will be there to help you spot the whales and answer any questions you might have during the tour. This tour sails at 9:00, 13:00 and 17:00 depending on the season.
During the summer months, you can also choose to take the Express Tour on a faster boat for no extra cost. This tour is 2-2.5 hours, but spends the same amount of time out in the whale watching area – perfect for those with a busy schedule who want to make the most of their time in Reykjavík! This tour sails at 10:00, 14:00 and 21:00 depending on the season.
