Collect new life-lasting memories in Iceland by joining this whale and puffin watching adventure from Reykjavík. This tour should not be missed by any lovers of wildlife that are willing to take a picturesque boat ride to the open waters of Faxaflói Bay.

Your excursion begins as you meet with your friendly local guides at the Old Harbour in Reykjavík’s city centre. There, you will board the vessel of your venture, and embark on a boat ride out to Faxaflói bay to witness the teeming wildlife of the coast.

You’ll be sailing towards three idyllic islands in the scenic bay, being the location of prime breeding grounds for the adorable North Atlantic puffin. Seeing these cute creatures up close is unforgettable, as you’ll no doubt fall in love with their colourful beaks and smiling eyes.

In addition to the puffins, avid bird watchers will be thrilled to find out that many other species inhabit these islands and the water around them, including Eider ducks, Arctic terns, Guillemots and Cormorants. If the weather is still enough, your captain might even turn off the boat engine so you can enjoy listening to the unique songs of these stunning seabirds.

Returning to dock at the harbour, you’ll get some free time to find your footing on land, exploring either the charming Old Harbour or the nearby city centre, before boarding another vessel and heading out for the whale watching segment of the tour.

During your second adventure of the day, you can expect to see the likes of Minke whales, White-beaked dolphins and Harbour porpoises, and sometimes even the enormous Humpbacks or Orcas. All these water giants belong to the most majestic animal species on the planet, and seeing them up-close is an unforgettable experience.

The puffin watching boat trip takes approximately one hour, while the whale watching lasts around three hours. Both experiences should leave you reeling with your love for nature, and don’t forget your camera for all the amazing wildlife photo opportunities.

Secure your spot now on this fantastic combo-tour and get to know the animals of Iceland. Check availability by choosing a date.

I would recommend this trip to anyone! The tour guides and crew members were friendly and had lots of information. I expected to have a better view of the puffins, but since they are so small and fast it was hard to see them. Thankfully, the crew provided us with binoculars. We were able to view a humpback whale, harbor porpoises, and a minke whale. It was a cold and rainy day, but the crew offered everyone full body jackets that made standing outside bearable. There were inside portions and restrooms on each boat.

Keep your fingers crossed for the whales and don’t expect to pat the puffins! The whole tour wasn’t exciting at all for me. In the whale part of the combo tour, even though our girl guide was very keen on finding whales for us, the success depends a great deal on luck. And luck wasn’t really smiling at us that day, as we could only spot the upper fin of a minke whale, and for two extremely short moments (dolphins could be seen throughout the ride, though). By the way, we did the whale tour with Elding, and I would recommend that they improve the sound system on the boat (specially in the closed deck) so that we can hear clearer what the guide is telling us. As for the puffin watching part of the combo tour, we went close to two islands and could see them on the cliffs and swimming or flying over the sea. But this happens at a long distance, so that only with binoculars it becomes to see the properly (they provide small binoculars, but I don’t know how good they are, as I had taken my own with me).
