Description
See the marine life and seabirds just off the coast of Reykjavik on this whale- and puffin-watching tour by RIB boat. The small, fast boat gets as close to the animals as possible without disturbing their natural behavior.
Your RIB boat waits for you at Reykjavik's Old Harbor. Each boat takes a maximum of 12 passengers. After you put on your overalls and life jacket, you board, strap in, and head out into Faxafloi Bay.
Further out at sea, you can see the green, mountainous Hvalfjordur Fjord (Whale Fjord) and the volcanic Reykjanes Peninsula. In clear weather, you can see all the way to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula.
Wildlife can appear at any time. The species seen most often in Faxafloi Bay are humpback and minke whales, dolphins, and porpoises.
The naturalist guide on board knows how to find these animals and tells you about them throughout the tour. Because the boat is small and fast, you can get closer to the animals than on larger vessels, although each encounter is on the animals' terms.
Puffins are also seen on this tour from late April until mid-August, along with other seabirds.
On the way back to Reykjavik's harbor, you pass some of the city's coastal landmarks, including Harpa Concert Hall, known for its modern architecture, and the Sun Voyager Sculpture.
