Read on to find out where they are located and how you can visit them. Iceland has more than 100 fjords spread across the country. Most travelers visit on fjord tours in Iceland or self-drive tours, covering regions like the Eastfjords, Westfjords, North Iceland, and the fjords just outside Reykjavik in the west. Note that the South Coast is not covered here, as it has no fjords. If you are looking for coastal scenery in that region, the

Mjoifjordur Fjord
Plan your drive

Mjoifjordur is the name of a fjord and a small village in the East Fjords area of Iceland. You can visit this beautiful strip of water and a tiny settlement with the same name by taking a slight detour from a seven-day self-drive tour of the Ring Road. Alternatively, you can take your time and explore more of Iceland with a 14-day self-drive tour. The Mjoifjordur fjord can be a fantastic addition to your Icelandic vacation, especially if you enjoy off-the-beaten-track destinations. The fjord is often referred to as one of the most remote parts of Iceland. Why You Can Trust Our ContentGuide t

Hvalfjordur is a 19-mile (30-kilometer) fjord in West Iceland, about 40 minutes north of Reykjavik. It is home to Glymur Waterfall, the Hvammsvik Hot Springs, and Allied wartime ruins. Read on to plan your visit. Hvalfjordur, the Whale Fjord, cuts 19 miles (30 kilometers) into the west coast of Iceland between Mosfellsbaer and Akranes. It is about 3 miles (5 kilometers) across at its widest and roughly 276 feet (84 meters) deep at its deepest point. Most travelers driving the Ring Road pass beneath it in seven minutes through a tunnel and never see it at all. Why You Can Trust Our

Hraunsfjörður with snowy peaks reflected. Photo: ArniGael, CC BY-SA 4.0 Hraunsfjörður fjord (the name means "lava fjord") is a narrow fjord on the north coast of the Snæfellsnes peninsula, West Iceland, between Stykkishólmur and Grundarfjörður. It is the innermost arm of Kolgrafafjörður (also called Urthvalafjörður), a branching bay off Breiðafjörður: the outer part of the arm is known as Seljafjörður, and the inner fjord, Hraunsfjörður proper, runs south behind the narrows of Mjósund to its head at Árnabotn. The inner fjord is about 3 km long and covers roughly 1.8 km². It takes its name fr

It's off to the West Fjords
Blogs

Well as the Germans say, "tomorrow it is so far" - meaning it the time has come for Yours Truly to take off on a road trip to the wonderful West Fjords to drop off books and generally have a marvellous time.  If you have not yet explored the West Fjords you are missing out on an incredible experience. They are the most sparsely populated area in Iceland (the population has drifted southward for various reasons, mostly economic - more on that later, perhaps) and also the area with the most imposing mountains and dramatic landscapes. Geologically they are also the oldest part of the country.

If you have ever travelled to the West Fjords of Iceland you will know that it is an unbelievably beautiful region, partly because it is so unspoiled. It is unspoiled largely because it is so remote, because the roads aren't great in many places, and because the terrain is such that you have to drive vast distances to get where you want to go, along seemingly endless coastlines of fjords that cut deep into the landscape. Often those roads take you up on heaths or mountain passes that are not for the faint of heart ... I don't know for how much of our trip we were driving along roads that were

Day one of our West Fjords tour: necro pants, scary landscapes and idyllic pastures
Blogs

Day 1 - Thursday, June 12 Our plan was to leave Reykjavík early-ish to get to Strandir, on the West Fjords, as soon as possible. However, since we had to stop to pick up some booze necessary provisions on the way out, it was actually 12.30 pm by the time we were on our way. We drove more or less without stopping (excepting a short stop in Borgarfjörður to drop off some books at the Settlement Centre) all the way to Hólmavík, on the eastern part of the West Fjords. There we stopped at the Museum of Sorcery and Witchcraft a) because we were dying to see the necro pants b) because we wanted to
