Information about The Settlement Center

The Settlement Centre provides guests with an insight into Iceland's age of settlement.Photo from: The Settlement Centre Facebook.

The Settlement Centre is an exhibition space and museum in Borgarnes, in the west of Iceland, dedicated to recreating the conditions faced by the country's earliest settlers.

The Settlement Centre is partly situated in two of the oldest buildings in Borgarnes but comprises of three in total: the reception hall, the merchant house and the warehouse. The merchant house is the town's oldest building, having been erected in 1877–78. The warehouse was constructed in the late 19th century.

The Settlement Centre was founded by Kjartan Ragnarsson and Sigríður Margrét Guðmundsdóttir and first opened May 2006 after renovations were made to the merchant house and the warehouse. Installing two main exhibitions, guests can now gain an insight into both Iceland's age of settlement and into one of the country's most famous pieces of literature, Egil's Saga.

The Settlement Centre also boasts a shop, selling local souvenirs and handicrafts, and a restaurant/cafe, serving a range of fish and meat dishes, soups, alcoholic beverages and coffee and tea.
