Description

Guesthouse Skalafell is a far-flung guesthouse on a farm in Southeast Iceland. Ring road explorers, travelers enjoying a slow-paced South Coast adventure, and those heading to the Eastfjords will find its location perfect, and all will appreciate its breathtaking surroundings.

Location & Nearby

Guesthouse Skalafell is a beautiful place to stay between the Eastfjords and South Coast. The first sites are 24 miles (38 kilometers) away in opposite directions. The striking, jagged mountain of Vestrahorn is east, where you can embark on coastal hikes in its shadow and find some incredible photographic opportunities. You can find the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon to the west, a breathtaking lake cluttered with enormous, vividly colored icebergs.

Jokulsarlon is nicknamed ‘the crown jewel of Iceland’s nature’ due to its beauty and is close to several other magical sites such as the Diamond Beach and the smaller Fjallsarlon glacier lagoon. These are the last major South Coast sightseeing stops when traveling from Reykjavik. It is thus possible to spend a day enjoying the other attractions before spending a night at Hotel Skalafell, then enjoying those around Jokulsarlon in depth.

Alternatively, you could enjoy all the sites of the South Coast in one day, spend the night at Guesthouse Skalafell, then continue to the Eastfjords.

The other famous features of the south, in order from Jokulsarlon traveling west, are the Skaftafell Nature Reserve, the black sand beach of Reynisfjara, the glacier of Solheimajokull, and the waterfalls of Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss. The South Coast is a must-see sightseeing route due to the diversity of its gorgeous attractions.

The Eastfjords are one of the most remote and magnificent parts of the country. The coastal roads have breathtaking views, an abundance of wildlife, and plenty of historic villages. Inland, you’ll find sites such as Hengifoss waterfall, the lake of Lagarfljot, the forest of Hallormstadaskogar, and Mount Snaefell.

The closest settlement to Guesthouse Skalafell is Hofn, a gorgeous town with plenty of amenities, public works of art, and stunning views. You’ll find grocery stores, restaurants, and tourist services here. It is just 27 miles (43 kilometers) away.

Facilities & Amenities

Guesthouse Skalafell offers twin and double rooms with either shared or private bathrooms, all with beautiful views from the windows, a bright ambiance, and access to complimentary Wifi. Families can alternately book a 388 square foot (36 square meters) cottage for up to five people. It has two bedrooms, one with a double bed, one with a bunk bed, and the cabin also boasts a living room with a sofa bed, a private bathroom, and a kitchenette.

Breakfast is served each morning, and there is a restaurant and bar where you can enjoy dinner and drinks. Furthermore, the outdoor terrace is perfect for catching the northern lights in winter and basking under the midnight sun in summer.
