Thrilling 9-Hour Combo Tour of Silfra Snorkeling and Raufarholshellir Caving from Reykjavik
Description
Summary
Description
Experience the beautiful views of Iceland from a new angle when you book this nine-hour combo tour of lava caving near Reykjavik and snorkeling in Silfra fissure. Adventurers should book now to discover geological wonder in one of Iceland's longest lava caves and the underwater world between two continents.
The small-group tour begins in Iceland's capital, Reykjavik, where you meet your friendly tour guide. Aboard a minibus from the BSI bus terminal, you will travel approximately 26 miles (42 kilometers) to reach the Raufarholshellir lava cave.
As an underground lava tunnel, Raufarholshellir cave gives insight into the volcanic activity that created Iceland. As you explore parts of its 4,461 feet (1,360 meters) length, you will see colorful rock formations and beautiful ice structures.
There is no need to crawl through the Raufarholshellir lava tube since its ceiling is up to 33 feet (10 meters), and most of it is paved. Even better, this natural cave is available for tour no matter what season you visit.
Following an otherworldly caving tour experience, you'll head out for a quick lunch at a nearby cafe. Soon after, you'll journey to the Thingvellir National Park for another immersive experience.
As soon as you arrive at the Thingvellir National Park, spectacular views of the lush and rugged landscape will welcome you. The park is both a geological paradise and a place of historical significance, as the birthplace of the first Icelandic parliament.
Thingvellir's most unique quality is its location in the Mid-Atlantic rift between the clearly visible North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. This geological activity helped create the Silfra fissure, where you'll have an unforgettable snorkeling experience.
One thing that sets the Silfra snorkeling adventure apart is the water itself. It's crystal clear, with visibility often exceeding a hundred meters (330 feet), and is pure enough to drink.
The channel may seem narrow from the land, but once you're in the water, you'll see how it opens up beneath the surface, spiraling down to a breathtaking crack. The underwater world is phenomenal, with dramatic rock formations and vivid colors. Occasionally, a few fish from the Thingvallavatn lake would also appear in the fissure.
For a safe and convenient experience, this tour provides you with all the necessary snorkeling and caving gear you need. Your certified divemaster will also take underwater shots as your souvenir for this great adventure.
The tour ends as you make your way back to Reykjavik.
