Get a taste of Iceland's adventure activities on this 1.5-hour buggy tour near Reykjavik. The tour suits anyone who wants an active outing without spending a full day on it.
The base camp for the buggies is on the outskirts of Reykjavik, about 15 minutes from downtown. You can drive or take the bus there yourself, or choose pickup and drop-off.
When you arrive, you meet your guides, who give you protective overalls, gloves, a ski mask, and a helmet. Then you board your buggies, with licensed drivers at the wheel and non-drivers in the passenger seat.
You set off on a bumpy trail into the nature just outside Reykjavik, starting around Hafravatn Lake, which is busy with birds in summer and covered in ice in winter.
Next to the lake is Hafrafell Mountain, which you drive up on twisting trails through mossy or snow-covered lava rock.
At the summit, you get off the buggy to take in the views. In decent weather, you can see Reykjavik spread out below you.
On a clear day, the views take in Esja Mountain, Faxafloi Bay, and the Hengill and Blafjoll mountain ranges.
After some time for photos, you drive back down the mountain to the base camp, with the rest of the day free for more tours or for relaxing in the city.
