Description
Explore the hidden beauty of Iceland underwater on this four-hour Silfra diving tour at the Thingvellir National Park. Thrill-seekers who want an extreme yet satisfying adventure in the land of fire and ice should book this tour today.
This small group tour in Iceland begins as you arrive at the Thingvellir National Park, one of the main attractions of the Golden Circle. Your tour guide, a certified dive instructor, will wait for you at Silfra car park, where you will start your four-hour adventure.
If you’re coming from Reykjavik, you can drive to the Silfra area eastward, traversing 33 miles (54 kilometers). On the other hand, for a more convenient experience, you may also request pick-up and drop-off services from the Icelandic capital for an extra fee.
After some quick introductions, your guide will brief you with all the information you need for the most unforgettable Silfra scuba diving experience. You will know how to use the snorkeling and diving gear, hand signals while underwater, the water conditions in the Silfra fissure, and other safety measures.
As you walk towards the diving site, you’ll have the opportunity to marvel at the geological wonders of Thingvellir National Park. This Golden Circle attraction is so beautiful and historically significant that it became Iceland’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site.
More than its rich history, Thingvellir is famous for its breathtaking landscapes, thanks to its unique location along the Mid-Atlantic ridge. This area marks the rift where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates constantly drift apart. You can walk and swim in-between two continents by visiting the Icelandic national park.
One of the most prominent features of the Thingvellir National Park is the Silfra fissure, where you’ll spend most of your time. The nearby Langjokull glacier feeds the meltwater that makes up the 507-foot (150-meter) long crack.
Once you dive into the crystal clear waters of the Silfra fissure, you’ll be a testament as to why travelers hail it as one of the clearest water in the world. You’ll marvel at the crystal-clear water while scuba diving with your experienced guide, often able to see over 330 feet (100 meters) in front of you.
You can even drink Silfra water because of how clean it is.
While underwater, you’ll see different lava formations in the four canyon sections, from the entrance to the lagoon area. The rock formations are colorful and otherworldly, ensuring excellent underwater sightseeing.
Note that with the challenging nature of this tour, joiners must be at least 18 years old. You must also complete a medical statement, provide a drysuit certification and a logbook with a minimum of 10 drysuit dives, and read the diving handbook.
After successfully exploring the cold waters of the spectacular Silfra fissure, you’ll return to Reykjavik or explore other attractions in the Golden Circle on your own.
