Adventure-Packed 4-Day Eldgja Trek Expedition through Iceland's Highlands from Reykjavik

Embark on the second day of your Icelandic adventure, commencing with a scenic walk along the Skafta river, guiding you through the picturesque Hvanngil valley and beneath the towering presence of Uxatindar mountain. 

Uxatindar is a mountain peak in the Southern Highlands that stands 2106 feet (642 meters) above sea level.  It is part of Vatnajokull National Park and is green with moss throughout summer.

As you traverse this route, anticipate an 11-mile (18-kilometer) hike, revealing a vibrant and colorful landscape that stands as a testament to Iceland's awe-inspiring natural beauty. The views along this stretch are truly impressive and breathtaking.

The day's trek leads to Skaelingar, a site that beckons the adventurous with the opportunity to take a refreshing dip in a cold mere. Skaelingar holds historical significance, housing an aged cabin that once played a vital role in the autumn sheep round-up, assisting farmers in collecting sheep from the Highland. These cabins, scattered across Iceland, offer a glimpse into the traditional practices of rural life, adding a cultural layer to your exploration.

What sets Skaelingar apart is its extraordinary lava formations, remnants of the Skaftareldar. These formations contribute to the area's unique and somewhat exotic appearance, showcasing the geological wonders shaped by volcanic activity. 

Amidst the tranquility of this place, the peculiar beauty of the lava formations becomes evident, creating a distinctive and picturesque backdrop for your journey.

The day's trek is expected to last approximately 8 hours. As participants traverse the terrain, they'll find themselves immersed in the calm and quiet surroundings, allowing for an appreciation of the striking beauty of the rugged landscape.

On the third day of your expedition, the journey kicks off with a trek to the summit of Gjatindur, offering a magnificent panoramic view of Iceland. From this vantage point, you'll witness a sweeping vista overlooking the Eldgja fissure. This huge, approximately 43.5-mile (70-kilometer) long canyon stretches from the mountain Gjatindur to the glacier Myrdalsjokull in the southeast.

As you traverse the terrain, you'll have the opportunity to observe the grandeur of the Eldgja fissure, gaining insight into the geological history of the region. The Eldgja eruption, which occurred in 934, left an enduring mark on the landscape, with the canyon and Ofaerufoss waterfall serving as tangible reminders of this historical event. 

The total lava flow from the Eldgja eruption is estimated to be around 19 km3, making it the most volumetric lava flow from a single eruption in historical records. The origins of this remarkable canyon trace back to the Katla volcano system, adding an extra layer of geological interest to your day of exploration in Iceland's highlands.

Descending from Gjatindur, the trail winds through the lava canyon, leading you to the renowned Ofaerufoss waterfall. This natural spectacle serves as a popular spot for a leisurely lunch break, allowing participants to relish the breathtaking surroundings before continuing the trail toward the final destination of the day – Holaskjol Highland Center.

Situated amidst the captivating highlands of Iceland, Holaskjol Highland Center offers a unique setting for the evening. The group will gather for a barbecue dinner, providing a communal and hearty meal against the backdrop of the rugged Icelandic landscape. The accommodation for the night will be in one of the cozy cabins at Holaskjol, providing a comfortable respite after a day of exploration.

The day's trek covers an approximate distance of 11 miles (18 kilometers) and is estimated to span over 8 hours. 

On day four, start your day with breakfast, followed by a visit to a hidden waterfall near Holaskjol Highland Center. This waterfall, tucked away in the surroundings, provides a serene and picturesque backdrop for your morning exploration.

After enjoying the natural beauty, you’ll depart from Holaskjol Highland Center and hit the road, driving towards the main South Coast road, known as number 1. 

Your journey takes you to the charming village of Vik, where you'll pause for a lunch break. Vik offers a brief stop to relax and refuel before continuing your South Coast exploration.

Next on your itinerary is the iconic black beach. This unique stretch of coastline is known for its distinct black sand, shaped by volcanic activity. Take in the rugged beauty of the shoreline and absorb the natural wonders that characterize this area.

The final destination for the day is the remarkable Seljalandsfoss waterfall. Marvel at the cascading water from this stunning natural attraction. It's not just a sight to behold from a distance – Seljalandsfoss allows adventurous visitors to walk behind the curtain of water, providing a unique and immersive experience.

After taking in the beauty of Seljalandsfoss, you’ll commence your journey back to Reykjavik. The estimated arrival time in the capital is around 17:00, marking the conclusion of your expedition through Iceland's Highlands and South Coast.
