Description

Join this rewarding, yet demanding hike on the beautiful Fimmvörðuháls hiking route, found in the Central Highlands of Iceland! This is the perfect tour opportunity for travellers looking to immerse themselves in the colourful majesty of the Highlands, as well as those passionate hikers looking to fit in a little trek during their time in the country.

This Fimmvörðuháls super jeep tour combines a moderate 3 km (1.9 miles) hike and an exciting super jeep adventure on tough mountain roads. The tour starts by driving up towards the hiking trail, Fimmvörðuháls, from the base at the tiny village of Skógar. This is roughly a 9 km (5.6 miles) journey, about an hour-long, and presents ample opportunity to enjoy the scenery as it passes by your window.

The start of the hiking trail, at Baldvinsskáli cabin, is surrounded by a magnificent view; the infamous volcanic glacier, Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull glacier, and Katla volcano are all visible from this position, providing real drama to the landscape. As with many points along this trail, the very beginning is an excellent stop for a little nature photography.

Having laced up your shoes and adjusted your hiking poles, you will head out for roughly 1 - 1 ½ hours, hiking toward the calderas, Mt. Magni and Mt. Móði. These two craters were a result of an eruption on Fimmvörðuháls in 2010, starting on the 20th March until the 13th of April.

When finding names for these craters it was truly fitting to look in the Norse mythology. Móði and Magni are the sons of Thor, the god of thunder.

After a little exploration, plus a peaceful moment by the craters, you will head back towards the super jeep at Baldvinsskáli. From there, you will travel back to Skógar with a stop at one of the gems of the Icelandic South Coast, Skógafoss waterfall.

So what are you waiting for? Hurry now and you too can experience the natural beauty of the Fimmvörðuháls hiking route in the Icelandic Central Highlands. Check availability by choosing a date.
