Your tour begins at 9:00 at the meeting point in Isafjordur harbor. Here, you'll meet your expert run guide and the other runners joining you on the tour. This excursion is physically demanding and only suitable for experienced runners with a high fitness level.
When ready, you'll board a boat and head to Latrar in the Hornstrandir nature reserve. The boat journey takes about an hour and boasts beautiful fjord views. When you arrive, you'll take a Zodiac boat shuttle to shore.
The Hornstrandir nature reserve is a rugged peninsula in the Westfjords. It's incredibly remote and only accessible by boat, so most visitors to Icelanders don't visit this area on their trip. The area is mostly uninhabited and offers a pristine wilderness experience for adventurers and nature lovers.
The nature reserve is renowned for its dramatic landscapes, including cliffs, deep fjords, and wild beaches. It's also home to diverse wildlife, such as Arctic foxes, seabirds, and seals. Keep your eye out for these animals during your run.
Its secluded location and challenging terrain make it an excellent location for runners looking to enjoy natural beauty.
After stretching and warming up, your guide will start the run, leading your group up the Straumnesfjall mountain. With an elevation of around 1,509 feet (460 meters), the mountain dominates the surrounding landscape with its rugged slopes and rocky peaks.
The mountain offers spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding fjords, cliffs, and coastal plains. It also contains remains from a US Army radar station built during the Cold War. Your guide will point this out, and you can snap a quick photo.
You'll then run back to Latrar, wading through a shallow river. You'll have a short break here to refuel. When you feel rested, you'll begin your ascent of the Stakkadalsfjall mountain, which is 853 feet (about 260 meters) high.
When you reach the top, you'll run through the Hesteyrarskard pass between the Burfell and Kagrafell mountains, then down to the Hesteyrardalur valley. The finishing point for the run is the Doctor's House. Here, you rest and indulge in freshly brewed coffee and light refreshments.
When you've all regained your breath, you'll catch the boat back to Isafjordur, ready to continue your adventures in the stunning Westfjords region.
