Description

Discover the beautiful landscapes of southern Iceland on the back of an Icelandic horse. Ride between the jagged mountains and wild Atlantic Ocean on this day tour, suited for all nature lovers who wish to get to know both the friendly Icelandic horse and the country’s stunning nature.

After being picked up in Reykjavík, you will be driven south, to the stables just outside of the town of Hveragerði. There you will meet both your guide for today and your ride, the friendly Icelandic horse. You'll be given a quick introduction to horses, as well as all safety gear needed before you start your journey.

The tour begins on a pleasant riding trail that will take you along open meadows, an ideal spot for trying out tölt, the special gait unique to the Icelandic horse. You will then follow Gljúfurá river to an old cemetery, situated close to the great Ölfusá glacial river where you’ll get incredible panoramic views of the surrounding rivers and the volcanoes Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull.

In the summer, you will follow a green path that will lead to the soft, black lava sand of the river’s banks. While on the back of the horse, you’ll wade through the shallow water of the river to the lush island of Lambey where you’ll enjoy a complimentary packed lunch. In the winter, you’ll ride to the river and then to the nearby hotel, where you’ll get to try a traditional Icelandic meat soup.

You’ll then continue your journey through the farmlands, making your way towards Ingólfsfjall mountain. There, you’ll find an old Viking path that will take you along the mountain Reykjafjall, where both horses and sheep graze in the summer.

On your return journey to the stables, you’ll get spectacular views of the Hveragerði town and the surrounding geothermal area. After you dismount your steed, you can enjoy hot coffee and home-made cake before heading back to Reykjavík city in the afternoon.

This tour is suited for both beginners and expert riders alike, you should keep in mind, however, that it includes 5-6 hours of riding so participants should be in good physical condition.

Don't hesitate! Saddle up and explore the Icelandic countryside with this fun-filled horse riding tour. Check availability by choosing a date.
