Take a one-way boat ride from Isafjordur Town to Hesteyri in the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve on this transfer, a good start for hiking in the reserve on your own.
Isafjordur is the largest town in the Westfjords and the gateway to the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve. You can reach it by a short flight or a long drive from Reykjavik.
The boat leaves from the harbor in Isafjordur. Depending on the boat used that day, it carries 30 to 48 passengers, and all the boats have two engines for added safety at sea.
You sail across Isafjardardjup Fjord, surrounded by mountains, and you may see whales and seabirds along the way.
Hesteyri is a former village that has been abandoned since 1952. It comes to life in summer, as the former residents and their families still own the houses and land. There are no shops or restaurants, but there is a guesthouse, and you can take short hikes in the area.
From Hesteyri, you can set out on hiking trails through the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve, where Arctic foxes live and seabirds nest in summer.
