Description
Ride in a super jeep to lesser-known places in South Iceland and the Southern Highlands on this guided tour. You visit the Lakagigar Craters, Tjarnargigur Crater, Fagrifoss Waterfall, and Fjadrargljufur Canyon.
The tour starts in Kirkjubaejarklaustur, a historic town in South Iceland.
You're picked up in a super jeep, a specially modified vehicle built for rugged terrain.
This is a small-group tour, so you can get to know your English-speaking guide and the other guests, and you have plenty of chances to ask questions.
Your first stop is the Lakagigar Craters, a row of craters around Laki Mountain. Here, you have about two and a half hours to hike and explore the volcanic landscape.
The hike to the summit of Laki Mountain gives you panoramic views of the craters and lakes below and the Highlands around you.
If you'd rather not hike, your guide can drive you to nearby hills with similar views.
The next stop is Tjarnargigur Crater, which holds a permanent lake. You take in the view from a viewing platform, then set off on an hour-long hike through the surrounding lava fields, a landscape shaped by volcanic activity.
Next, you visit Fagrifoss Waterfall, whose name means "beautiful falls." You have about 20 to 30 minutes to explore and take photos.
The final stop is Fjadrargljufur Canyon. Walking along the canyon's upper trails, you look down on the blue river that winds through it and the green cliffs that rise on either side.
Afterward, you return to Kirkjubaejarklaustur.
