Description

Experience a back-to-back nature adventure in Iceland with this combo tour of puffin-watching and horseback riding from Reykjavik. If you want to see the cute puffins on Akurey island and tour the beautiful Laxnes farm while riding a majestic horse, this wildlife tour is the perfect experience to book.

This day tour starts at the beautiful Old Harbor of Reykjavik, where you’ll meet your friendly, English-speaking guide. The harbor is just a mile from the city center and near most of Reykjavik's accommodations.

From the harbor, the journey takes you on a 15-minute boat ride to Akurey island, where the first part of your wildlife sightseeing tour awaits. The boat tour might be short, but it provides breathtaking scenery of Faxafloi bay surrounding Reykjavik and West Iceland.

Akurey is a small island north of the Icelandic capital, known for its colonies of the famous puffins of Iceland. Puffins are cute seabirds often associated with the land of fire and ice, which you can easily recognize with their black and white feathers and colorful beaks.

Although you cannot set foot on the island, the boat will get close to it for an unforgettable puffin-watching experience. While admiring them feeding or nesting, don’t forget to snap some photos, as they make great subjects for nature photography.

You'll have access to binoculars for a closer look.

Apart from puffins, other seabirds to see in this area are guillemots, fulmars, and kittiwakes.

After puffin watching in Akurey island, you’ll return to Reykjavik to prepare for the second leg of the combo tour. While waiting, you can grab a quick lunch or stroll around the Old Harbor, where you’ll be picked up early in the afternoon.

Soon after, your Icelandic trip takes you to the charming Laxnes horse farm in Mosfellsbaer town, 14 miles (23 kilometers) from Reykjavik. The farm is excellent for horseback riding tours because of its majestic Icelandic horses and countryside location.

Before riding, your guide will provide you with safety instructions and equipment. The tour price includes a helmet, a raingear, and boots. If it’s your first time, fret not, as the activity isn’t demanding, and the guide can assist you.

Once settled in, an exciting horseback riding experience awaits you at Laxnes farm. Lush meadows and valleys cover the farmland with colorful flowers such as lupines during summer. You’ll pass through hills, shallow rivers, and scenic trails while overlooking the towering mountains of southwest Iceland.

While enjoying the ride,  the guide will tell you interesting facts about Icelandic horses, the Laxnes farm, and its surrounding areas. At any point during the excursion, you may ask them questions or assistance if needed.

After a satisfying horse riding trip, you’ll return to the receiving area of the farm for a quick rest. Then, you’ll head back to Reykjavik, marking the end of this combo tour.
