Magical 5-Hour Super Jeep Tour to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge on the Reykjanes Peninsula from Reykjavik
Description
Summary
Description
Explore one of Iceland's most fascinating geological wonders on this magical super jeep tour to the Mid-Atlantic ridge. This five-hour adventure takes travelers to the Reykjanes peninsula, where volcanic landscapes, craters, hot springs, and tectonic plates separating Europe and North America await.
The day begins when a friendly guide picks you up from your hotel in Reykjavik. You'll then ride a comfortable off-road vehicle that will take you safely to Reykjanes peninsula and the various attractions slated for the day.
Your first stop on the Reykjanes peninsula is the Bridge Between the Continents, a symbolic bridge that connects the North American and Eurasian plates. The bridge gives you a unique opportunity to stand between two tectonic plates and between two continents.
The Bridge Between the Continents spans 50 feet long and has a sign indicating where the Eurasian and North American plates meet. Meanwhile, the surrounding area is marked by black sand and rugged lava fields.
Next, you'll head to the Stampar craters, formed during a series of volcanic eruptions in the 13th century. The Stampar craters are two volcanic fissures stretching for several kilometers, reflecting the country's rich volcanic past. You'll see blackened lava fields, jagged rock formations, and expansive craters.
Your next destination is Stora-Sandvik, a picturesque cove with grassy dunes and a black sand beach. Located near the Bridge Between the Continents, Stora-Sandvik contrasts dramatically with the often turbulent, white-capped sea waves. You'll encounter various bird species like ducks, geese, gulls, Red-necked Phalaropes, and Whooper Swans.
After enjoying some natural attractions, you'll shift to something man-made: the Reykjanes lighthouse. Also called Reykjanesviti, this lighthouse was originally constructed in 1878, making it Iceland's oldest. Eight years later, a major earthquake destroyed the Reykjanes lighthouse beyond repair.
A new structure was built in 1908, which is the one you'll see on this tour. Standing at 102 feet (31 meters), the Reykjanes lighthouse features a tall white tower that contrasts the surrounding rugged landscape of lava fields and rolling green hills.
You'll head next to Reykjanes' rocky Atlantic coast. The peninsula's landscape features jagged black lava rocks, dramatic cliffs, and the constant roar of the North Atlantic waves crashing against the shore. As you enjoy the fresh breeze, appreciate the rocky coastline contrasting with the deep blue ocean.
Next on your schedule is a visit to the Gunnuhver hot springs area. The area is named after a ghost, Gunna, who, according to local legend, haunted the region until a priest trapped her in one of the hot springs. You'll see large, bubbling mud pools, fumaroles, and steam vents releasing sulfur-scented steam clouds into the air. For your final stop of the day, you'll head to Brimketill, a naturally occurring lava rock pool surrounded by jagged lava formations. The name Brimketill translates to "whitewater cauldron," describing the frothy waves that frequently fill the pool.
Though it may seem tempting, it's not safe to swim in Brimketill due to the powerful currents and waves that often crash violently against the rocks. Still, enjoying the contrast between the volcanic landscape and the mighty ocean and taking as many photos as you want will ensure a memorable experience.
A trip back to Reykjavik marks the end of your magical adventure.
