Description
Summary
Description
Spice up your trip to the land of fire and ice with a thrilling hike atop the frozen wilderness of Solheimajokull glacier. This private tour is perfect for travelers who want to enjoy a quiet adventure away from tourist crowds.
The great adventure begins as you meet your guide in the parking lot for Solheimajokull, near the village of Skogar on Iceland’s South Coast. The meeting area is just a few meters away from your destination, just the right spot to get a good view of the massive outlet glacier.
This private tour doesn’t include a pick-up, so joiners from Reykjavik must arrange for a transfer to the meeting point separately. The drive from Iceland’s capital will cover 103 miles (165 kilometers) of travel, an excellent opportunity to witness beautiful landscapes and coastal areas.
Before your glacier hiking activity, your private group will trek from the parking lot to the ice cap. The distance is only a few hundred meters, so you’ll arrive at your destination in no time. Here, you'll put on your crampons for your adventure.
As you set foot on Solheimajokull glacier, you will be greeted by an expansive view of beautiful terrain, mostly covered by ice and snow. Unlike some glaciers in Iceland, Solheimajokull features diverse sceneries, from powdery white to electric blue and ash black surfaces.
Your experienced guide will teach you how to walk on the ice to make your adventure safer and more comfortable. This includes demonstrating how to use the glacier equipment, including the ice axe and crampons. Soon after, you will be free to explore the best spots atop the glacier at your own pace.
Solheimajokull, with its overwhelming length of five miles (eight kilometers), is an outlet glacier of the massive Myrdalsjokull ice cap. Myrdalsjokull glacier is Iceland’s fourth largest ice cap, behind the famous Vatnajokull and Langjokull glaciers. The notorious Katla and Eyjafjallajokull volcanoes are within this area.
You will pass through spectacular land and ice formations within three hours of hiking. The numerous ice walls here are perfect for easy and challenging climbs. In some parts of the frozen surface, you will see crevasses and ice ridges that are fitting subjects for landscape photography.
Since the glacier sits at a high elevation, you will also have an obstructed view of the South Coast’s scenic attractions. During your trip, there will also be plenty of opportunities to drink glacial water straight from the glacier streams.
You will spend a few hours under chilly temperatures, and unpredictable weather conditions, which is why suiting up with the proper attire is required. Warm, waterproof winter clothing and sturdy hiking shoes are essential for a safe and enjoyable hiking experience.
Once you get the best of your private glacier hiking experience atop one of Iceland’s best outlet glaciers, you will return to the parking lot where you began the tour.
Explore otherworldly landscapes of different colors while you experience one of Iceland’s most thrilling adventures on top of Solheimajokull glacier. Check availability now by choosing a date.
