Description

Discover one of Iceland’s most unique and beautiful beaches, Rauðasandur on this exciting and informative walking tour. This excursion is perfect for those who are visiting Iceland’s majestic Westfjords and want to explore one of its hidden gems.

Most of Iceland’s beaches are black due to volcanic basalt rock, however, Rauðasandur is unique in that it is made up of vast golden sands set among black cliffs and blue ocean. The sandy beach takes its colours from pulverized scallop shells that have accumulated over the centuries.

On sunny days the glittering sands seem to stretch for miles and it’s possible to make out Snæfellsnes peninsula across Breiðarfjörður bay. Seals are often seen on the beach, in late June, July and August, with their offspring providing the chance to get closer to Iceland’s wildlife.

Your expert local guide will pick you up in the town of Patreksfjörður and drive you down the mountainous route to begin your tour of the beach. You will be guided across Rauðasandur’s breathtaking landscapes all the while being told local stories and legends that are said to have happened on the sands. One such tale is that of a forbidden romance between an adulterous couple at Sjöundaá farm which has been retold many times in literature and theatre.

As well as personalised informed guidance, you can expect multiple stops for photo opportunities and plenty of time to enjoy the tranquil Rauðasandur.

Your walking tour will end at the French Café where they offer soup or coffee, hot cocoa, waffles with cream and delicious homemade French chocolate cake. There you can sit on the patio and enjoy the beautiful view of Rauðasandur before being driven back to Patreksfjörður.

Get to know one of Iceland’s most unique beaches and look forward to the unforgettable memory of this incredible landscape and unbeaten nature. Check availability by choosing a date.
