Explore the Lake Myvatn Nature Reserve in North Iceland from a new perspective on this snowmobile tour.
In winter, many people consider snowmobiles the best way to explore the Lake Myvatn area.
The tour is family-run. It starts at Hella Farm and runs mostly on the family's private land within the nature reserve. For many years, the family has used snowmobiles to get around the region, for both leisure and work.
The idea of the tour is to show you the backcountry of the Myvatn area, with little-known places off the map, such as explosion craters, islands in Lake Myvatn, and ruins of old abandoned farms.
At the snowmobile base, you meet your guide, who helps you find a helmet and overalls in your size. Your guide goes over the safety rules and shows you how to drive and operate a snowmobile. Before you set off, your guide explains the route and how the group drives in single file at a safe speed.
The ride has a few stops to take in the landscape, take photos, and learn about the area. The tour combines the experience of riding a snowmobile with visits to places that are out of reach for most visitors. If you share a snowmobile, you have time to switch places so everyone gets a chance to drive.
