Description

Discover one of the hidden pearls of East Iceland in this hiking tour of the incredible Stórurð area. This tour is perfect for those who want to discover the natural beauty of one of the most unique hiking areas in the country.

Stórurð is a vast boulder area that was most likely created by a landslide at the end of the last Ice Age. Giant boulders of volcanic rock were carried by a glacier snout to their present location millennia ago; the result is a unique natural attraction. This part of the country offers a wide variety of different landscapes to explore, making it a perfect destination for hikers of most skill levels.

Your tour will begin in the town of Egilsstaðir, the largest town in East Iceland. Your guide will pick you up and take you to the starting point of your hike. You will then be given crampons or hiking poles if you need them before you set off on your adventure.

You will then spend a full day hiking along the many trails available in the area. Hiking allows you to take in the full spectrum of sightseeing at your own pace. Stórurð sits below a small glacier west of the Dyrfjöll Mountains. The landscape is filled with boulders ranging in sizes. Between the boulders are flat grassy areas and deep blue ponds.

As you travel throughout the area, your guide will be able to give you more information about how it was formed, points of interest and popular hiking trails. You will have plenty of time to explore and really get to know this secluded, peaceful part of the country.

You will then be returned to Egilsstaðir with a head full of memories and possibly a newfound level of calm.

Don’t miss out on the chance to escape into a true natural paradise. Pick a date to check availability.
