Take the Baldur ferry one way from Stykkisholmur on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula to Brjanslaekur in the Westfjords. The ferry crossing shortens the route between South and West Iceland and the Westfjords, and it runs all year.
The Baldur ferry carries both passengers and vehicles, with room for about 46 vehicles. You can bring your car, campervan, motorcycle, or bicycle for an extra fee.
The journey starts at the harbor in Stykkisholmur Town. As the ferry crosses Breidafjordur Bay, you can enjoy the views of the bay's countless islands.
On some departures, the ferry stops at Flatey Island. If you'd like to stop on the island, you need to book it in advance.
On board, you can buy hot and cold dishes, drinks, and sweets in the passenger lounge above the car deck, and free Wi-Fi is available.
You arrive at Brjanslaekur, an old manor and parsonage at the mouth of Vatnsfjordur Fjord, with a ferry slip and an old shellfish factory. Here you'll also find the protected Flokatoftir ruins, believed to be the remains of the settlement of Hrafna-Floki, one of the first settlers of Iceland.
From Brjanslaekur, you can continue by road through the Westfjords. Patreksfjordur, the nearest town, is about a 45-minute drive away.
