Description

Explore the magnificent Westfjords with ease by booking this ferry service from the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Those who want to witness the beauty of Iceland in a unique way should not miss out on this opportunity.

The ferry Baldur runs throughout the year, taking guests from the town of Stykkishólmur on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula to Brjánslækur in the Westfjords via the island of Flatey. Stykkishólmur is just under two and a half hours’ drive from Reykjavík and the largest town in the area. Of course, you can bring your car onto the ferry in preparation for your trip.

While you can drive from Stykkishólmur to the Westfjords, this journey is quicker and allows you to take a break from wheel to witness the incredible nature of Breiðafjörður Bay.

Northwards, creeping ever closer as you travel, you will be able to see the spectacular tabletop mountains and deep, magnificent fjords that define your destination. Southwards, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula will unfold, revealing countless volcanic peaks and providing you with an unmatched view of the Snæfellsjökull glacier.

You'll stop at the island of Flatey, once an epicentre of religion, culture and the arts. This hidden gem has a fascinating history but is visited by very few guests. In the summertime, if you take the earlier ferry, you have the option of disembarking and spending a couple of hours exploring the quaint island community before catching the next boat to continue your journey to the Westfjords.

Cars are not allowed on Flatey so if you choose to make a stop, you will have to give a member of staff the keys to your car and they will park it on the other side for you to collect upon arrival.

You will have a chance to look out for some of Iceland’s wildlife. The islands of the bay are renowned for their seabirds, being a particular favourite nesting ground for white-tailed eagles. The waters of Breiðafjörður are also home to many seals.

The Baldur ferry is very spacious, with comfortable seating indoors and plenty of space to marvel over the views on deck. There is also a restaurant with an extensive menu and a Children’s Corner where the young ones can watch television and play. Pets are permitted in certain areas on board, and there is free wifi throughout.

Your destination, Brjánslækur, is a gateway to the Westfjords. It provides an excellent point from which to explore this remote and beautiful region, with its accessibility to sites such as the unbelievable Látrabjarg birdwatching cliffs and magnificent waterfall of Dynjandi.

Hop on board the Baldur ferry for a wonderful trip to one of Iceland’s most spectacular regions. Check availability by choosing a date.
