Get to know the backcountry roads of the Icelandic Westfjords on this sightseeing circle route F622 of Svalvogar. Anyone staying in the Westfjords looking to experience the desolate beauty of this rural region should not let this opportunity pass by.
Your adventure begins in the town of Ísafjörður, where you will hit the road in a Super Truck with your local guide and start your drive to the fjord of Dýrafjörður, surrounded by the majestic mountains Sandafell and Mýrafell on each side.
Your journey then continues, as you brave a winding rocky mountain road, legendarily paved by a single man and his son with a 70 horsepower bulldozer in the 1970s. The sights on hand include a cluster of abandoned farms, but the Westfjords were amongst the very first areas settled by Viking Age explorers.
You will also behold a spectacular mountain range often referred to by the locals as the Alps of the Westfjords. With a peak of 998 metres, Kaldbakur is the tallest mountain in the region. While most of the Westfjords mountains are characterised by flat tops, Kaldbakur’s is tall and pointed, hence the comparison to the most extensive mountain range in Europe.
Your adventure continues to Arnarfjörður, the second biggest fjord of the Westfjords, dotted with waterfalls, dormant volcanoes and scenic bays. You will then drive along the steep and narrow road of Hrafnseyrarheiði, a stunning heathland boasting flat-topped mountains, so remember to pack your camera for all the amazing photo opportunities.
Then, it is time to make your way back to Ísafjörður, crisscrossing along the rugged fjords that you have come to know and love throughout your journey. The Svalvogar circle route might be one of the most celebrated routes of the country regarding their natural sights and sceneries, but these roads cannot be ventured with a regular vehicle.
Book your Westfjords adventure now for a chance to experience this incredibly scenic route onboard a Super Jeep with local guidance. Check availability by choosing a date.
