Drive the F622 Svalvogar Circle, a remote 4x4 track along the coast of the Westfjords, on this Super Jeep tour from Isafjordur.
The tour starts at the harbor in Isafjordur, where you board a high-clearance 4x4 truck with your local guide and head for Dyrafjordur Fjord.
The first stop is Thingeyri Village, one of the oldest trading villages in Iceland, where you can stretch your legs and use the restrooms.
Then you drive the F622, also known as Kjaran's Road, a cliffside track built with a small bulldozer by Elis Kjaran and his son. Only high-clearance 4x4 vehicles can drive it, and it gives you views of cliffs, fjords, and the mountain range known as the Westfjords Alps. The range includes Kaldbakur Mountain, the highest peak in the Westfjords at 3,274 feet (998 meters).
Along the way, you pass several abandoned farms, and your guide shares stories of survival and folklore from the people who once lived here.
Next, you visit Hrafnseyri Farm, the birthplace of Jon Sigurdsson, leader of Iceland's independence movement. Here, you can explore the museum, step inside traditional turf houses, and have a late lunch and coffee with homemade cake.
Then you cross the Hrafnseyrarheidi Heath road, and the tour ends with a drive to the top of Sandafell Mountain, with panoramic views over Dyrafjordur Fjord, before you return to Isafjordur.
