Description
Explore the majestic underground cave tunnels of the Raufarholshellir lava tubes in this one-of-a-kind adventure. Join an expert guide and learn about the inner workings of volcanic eruptions as you step into this Hollywood-worthy sight deep within Iceland.
Raufarholshellir cave is about 25 miles (40 kilometers) southeast of Reykjavik and is easy to reach by car throughout the year. Alternatively, you can add pick-up from near your hotel in Reykjavik for an additional charge. Once you meet your guide, you’ll journey to the depths below, following the same path that ancient lava once flowed through some 5600 years ago.
You’ll need to bring some good footwear as you’ll be walking quite a bit. The tour will provide you with helmets and flashlights for your safety, and a professional guide is available should you need assistance. Warm clothes are also recommended because of the near-freezing temperatures inside the caves.
The entrance to the cave has manufactured platforms for easier access. It’s also very spacious at 98 feet (30 meters) wide and 33 feet (10 meters) high, so there’s plenty of room to move around. The lava tube ceiling has also caved in near the entrance, creating beautiful columns of light to welcome you into the depths.
Your guide will take you over a thousand feet (350 meters) into the cave, but the entire lava tube is actually over 4,460 feet (1,360 meters) long! Once inside, an assortment of striking colors should immediately catch your eye. There is a high diversity of minerals on the walls of the tunnels, giving them a uniquely fantastic combination of shades.
Your eyes will also enjoy seeing different rock and ice formations decorating the cave. As you continue exploring the tunnels, your guide will be happy to answer any questions you may have about Raufarholshellir cave, its formation, and history.
This underground lava cave in the land of ice and fire is surely a sight to behold. Fascinating, visually magnificent, and worth a visit for anyone exploring the beauty of Iceland! Check availability now by choosing a date.
