Description
Visit the awe-inspiring Raufarholshellir lava tunnel and witness the beauty of the geological process that makes these caves natural treasures. This three-hour caving tour of the Raufarholshellir cave in Iceland is perfect for any seeking the country's most unique and beautiful natural attractions.
You'll be picked up from your accommodation in Reykjavik and dropped off there once the tour is finished.
The tour itself begins at the entrance of the Raufarholshellir lava caves, where the guides will provide the necessary equipment and safety information. Once the group is fully prepared, you will descend into the lava tube cave.
You'll embark on a leisurely walk with footbridges and pathways in some areas. However, there are some unaltered paths, so ensure you're comfortable with uneven footing in some areas before going on this tour.
Once the tour group starts to delve deeper into the cave system, you will begin to witness the numerous wonders of the Raufarholshellir lava tunnel. First are the rainbow-colored walls, dyed beautiful shades of green, red, blue, and purple by the mineral deposits in the rock.
On your tour, you will notice that the caves' most visually spectacular areas are illuminated for a better viewing experience. The tour guide leading you through the caves will explain the geologic processes that formed the caves, like how lava flow allowed for a more tubular structure formation.
Despite being a geologic formation created thousands of years ago, the Raufarholshellir lava tunnel still changes throughout the year. For example, when visiting in the winter, you will see glimmering ice shards hanging from the ceiling of the cave, a beautiful sight to witness during the holidays.
The Raufarholshellir Lava Tunnel also boasts an impressive 32 feet (10 meters) tall ceiling, allowing those sparkling ice shards to appear like stars in the night sky. This makes the caves feel like a world of their own, abundant with beautiful colors and amazing sights.
The total length of the tunnel is 4500 feet (1360 meters), and the main tunnel is 3000 feet (900 meters) long. Therefore, wearing appropriate winter clothing and good hiking boots is strongly recommended.
As you plumb the cave depths, you will learn about how these features were used as hideaways for bandits and how Icelanders once believed them to be the homes of trolls.
Your guide will provide a headlight and a helmet for exploring the caves. During the winter, they will also provide crampons.
After a thrilling experience, you'll return to Reykjavik.
