Your ATV ride starts at a base just outside Reykjavik, where you'll meet your guide and gear up. After receiving a full safety briefing, you’ll head off into the rugged surroundings of the Hengill Geothermal Region.
No off-road experience is needed for this adventure. You'll quickly find your rhythm on an easy-to-handle ATV as you cross the black lava fields of Svinahraun, a vast expanse of moss-covered rock shaped by ancient eruptions.
As you continue across the volcanic terrain, you'll enjoy views of Mount Hengill. Along the route, you'll pass the Hellisheidi Geothermal Power Plant, one of the largest geothermal power stations in the world, and learn how Iceland harnesses volcanic heat to produce clean, renewable energy.
At the geothermal area of Hveradalir, watch steam rise from the ground and see bubbling mud pools shaped by the area's geothermal activity.
Your adventure continues beneath Vifilsfell, a subglacial volcano formed during the Ice Age, and into Josepsdalur, a hidden valley rich in Icelandic folklore. Once said to be the refuge of outlaws, this rugged valley is now a popular area for outdoor adventures and ATV riding. Your guide will share the legends and history that give the landscape its character.
Before heading back, you'll stop at a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the lava fields, the Blafjoll Mountain Range, and the Reykjavik area. It's the perfect place to take photos and enjoy the scenery before the ride ends.
Traveling in a small group ensures a more personal experience, with plenty of time to enjoy each stop along the way. Each ATV accommodates two riders, making it easy to share the experience with friends, while a single-rider upgrade is available for those who prefer to drive solo.
