I was lucky enough to be invited by the lovely Sigga, the owner of Sjávarborg Guesthouse, and I can honestly say this place is a hidden gem on the northern coast of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in western Iceland. Nestled right in the heart of the postcard-perfect town of Stykkishólmur, Sjávarborg is more than just a guesthouse, it’s a home away from home filled with charm, warmth, and a whole lot of character.
Stykkishólmur itself is known for its colorful houses, rich history, and stunning harbor views, and Sjávarborg fits right in with this magical vibe. The guesthouse sits just steps from the picturesque harbor, with views that stretch out across the sea and to the striking mountain that rises just in front of it. Waking up to that view each morning felt like something straight out of a dream. And one evening, as if the place hadn’t already stolen my heart, I was presented with one of the most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever witnessed… golden light melting into pastel skies, painting everything in soft, surreal hues. It was pure magic!
What makes Sjávarborg so special is its unique blend of retro and vintage décor. Nothing seems to match at first glance and yet, everything comes together beautifully. Every corner has its own story, every detail feels lovingly chosen. From bold, vibrant walls to quirky old-school furniture and carefully curated artwork, this place bursts with personality. No two rooms are the same, and each offers a cozy, colorful escape that feels both nostalgic and fresh.
The coffeeshop on the ground floor is another reason to fall in love with this place. Whether you’re stopping by for a delicious homemade pastry, a hearty meal, or just a perfect cup of coffee, you’ll be greeted with the same warmth and care that defines the whole guesthouse. Everything is made with love and you can taste it.
But what truly sets Sjávarborg apart is Sigga herself. She is one of those rare souls who makes you feel instantly welcome. Her attention to detail and heartfelt hospitality create an atmosphere that’s both inspiring and comforting. She’s always around with a helpful tip and she has a true gift for making her guests feel at home.
If you ever find yourself in Stykkishólmur, do yourself a favor and stay at Sjávarborg. It’s not just a place to sleep, it’s a place to feel, to connect, and to be inspired.
