I often visit the pretty little villages on the south coast of Iceland, Stokkseyri and Eyrarbakki, where the pace of life is very different from that of Reykjavík, Iceland's capital city, where I live. In this travel blog, I will be showing you what I find so alluring about Eyrarbakki village, which has around 602 inhabitants. Back in the 18th century, Eyrarbakki was a very vibrant community and served as a centre for fashion and culture in Iceland. Here you could find one of Iceland's biggest ports and trading centres, serving the south coast of Iceland all the way to Mt. Lómagnúpur.

Raufarhólshellir lava cave - the Lava Tunnel - is one of the extraordinary lava caves in Iceland. It has been made more accessible to visitors and reopened with guided tours in June 2017. The remote Strandir in Iceland - Stillness & Sorcery

Join me on a day tour of one of the remotest areas of Iceland - the scenic Strandir. While some 7,000 people live in the Westfjords Region of Iceland, 4,000 of whom live in the capital city of the Westfjords, Ísafjörður, only about 60 people (2025) live in the rural district of Árneshreppur at Strandir. In my previous travel blog, I told you about the beautiful nature and hot pools by Hotel Laugarhóll, where I stayed for the night. In the remote and peaceful Strandir on the eastern part of the Westfjords region of Iceland, many a pearl of nature awaits you. On one of my visits to Strandir, I stayed for one night at Hotel Laugarhóll in Bjarnarfjörður, where you will find several of these pearls, amongst them the preserved hot pool of Guðmundur góði - Guðmundur the Good, who was the bishop at Hólar in the 13th century. After joining several whale-watching tours in Iceland, I have become an avid whale watcher. So when I was travelling in the Westfjords Region of Iceland and heard about a new whale-watching tour in Hólmavík, I jumped at the chance of seeing some whales. We were staying in Bjarnarfjörður for the night, and one of the hotel guests had joined a whale-watching tour of Láki Tours earlier that same day. She told us about the tour and couldn't hold her excitement - on this tour, a humpback whale had put on a half-hour "show" right in front of the whale watching boat! And it even breached (jumped)

On a lovely summer day in July, I visited the largest seabird cliff in Iceland, Látrabjarg in the Westfjords of Iceland, which is one of the best places to photograph a puffin in Iceland. This cute bird has almost become the icon of Iceland, as it is ever so photogenic. To enjoy my visit to the fullest, I stayed overnight in the vicinity at Hotel Breiðavík, the westernmost hotel in Europe, which is only 12 km from Látrabjarg cliff.
