You don't have to drive far away from Reykjavík, Iceland's capital city, to find a very colourful geothermal area. I recently hiked through such an area, which made me feel like I stepped into another world for a moment. This beautiful geothermal area is located at Nesjavellir and belongs to the Hengill volcanic area. The volcano Hengill is amongst the largest high-temperature geothermal areas in Iceland, covering some 100 km2. Aldeyjarfoss waterfall in the Skjálfandafljót river in North Iceland is one of the most beautiful waterfalls I have ever seen in my country. It has a drop of 20 meters into a turbulent, icy-cold pool and is set in such beautiful basalt columns that the beauty blows my mind. Aldeyjarfoss, in the right light, is an ideal location for photography. In this travel blog, I am going to show you a special phenomenon you pass on Ring Road 1 just east of Reykjavík. You will notice a cluster of dark maroon hills. These hills are called Rauðhólar - Red Hills, and are around 5,000 years old pseudocraters, give or take a few years. In a mysterious cave by the marina in Keflavík town lives a Giantess with a heart of gold. The Black Cave of the Giantess was opened on the 6th of September 2008 during the town festival Ljósanótt - Night of Lights. On that day, the Giantess moved all the way from her mountain into the cave in SW-Iceland. She doesn't have a name, as she has forgotten it, but is referred to as Giganta - Skessan in Icelandic. It is quite a remarkable cave, as two families lived in it in the last century, and two children were even born in this cave. Laugarvatnshellir is one of the very few caves in Iceland in which people actually lived. It was normal for outlaws to live in caves, but not for the common Icelander.
