The Hvammsvik Retreat and Hot Springs are 40 miles (54.7 kilometers) northeast of Reykjavik, on the shore of Hvalfjordur. This location translates to the ‘whale fjord,’ and though it is not renowned for its whales, it is home to many birds and seals.

Because the pools are open until 21:00 and there are few sources of light pollution in the area, you could see the aurora borealis vividly from the comfort of the geothermal waters.

The northern lights can be seen between September and April, although you’ll have more chance to see them in midwinter when the nights are longer. For example, Iceland can experience up to 20 hours of darkness in December and January.

Of course, the sky needs to be clear, and the forecast needs to be strong for good viewing. You can check the conditions on Iceland’s weather website before booking. If you are not fortunate enough to see the northern lights in the Hvammsvik Hot Springs, you can book plenty of northern lights tours for another shot.

If you are traveling to Iceland in summer, you won’t see the aurora borealis. Instead, however, you can enjoy the Hvammsvik Hot Springs in full sunlight due to the phenomenon of the midnight sun.
