BakaBaka view from outside

BakaBaka combines modern techniques with classic baking traditions, all within one of Reykjavik’s most historic buildings. This charming location dates back to 1834 and is believed to have housed one of Iceland’s very first bakeries.

Today, BakaBaka honors that legacy by serving wood-fired sourdough breads, all-day brunch, and comforting dishes made with a refined, modern twist.

BakaBaka operates as a bakery and cafe by day, offering freshly baked artisan pastries and organic sourdough breads made with Icelandic stone-milled flour. In the evening, it transforms into an Italian eatery, serving wood-fired pizzas, pasta, natural wines, and local beers.

The interior design thoughtfully preserves the building's historical character, featuring exposed brick and wood beams that create a charming atmosphere.

Just steps from the iconic Laugavegur Shopping Street, it’s the perfect stop for travelers and locals alike looking for flavorful food in a relaxed and welcoming setting.

BakaBaka First Impressions

View of the pastries by the entrance of BakaBaka

We visited BakaBaka during a weekday lunch hour and were welcomed into a warm, lively, and friendly atmosphere. Despite the midday rush, we were seated right away, and the staff greeted us with genuine hospitality.

The space itself feels thoughtfully designed: cozy but open, with natural light pouring through large windows and the scent of sourdough in the air. Everything adds to a sense of grounded charm, from the visible bakery counter to the rustic brick and wood-beam interior.

BakaBaka's menu offers plenty of delicious options all day.

BakaBaka offers a curated all-day menu that changes throughout the day. In the mornings, expect a delicious spread of:

  • Freshly baked sourdough breads

  • Flaky, buttery pastries

  • Croque madame (a ham and cheese sandwich with a runny egg on top)

  • House-made granola with Icelandic skyr (a thick, creamy yogurt-like dairy)

  • Egg dishes served with grilled sourdough

As the day moves on, the brunch and lunch menu expands with hearty vegetarian options, globally inspired egg plates, and a rotation of sandwiches and specials. By evening, the space shifts into a cozy pizzeria, featuring wood-fired sourdough pizzas, natural wines, and local beer.

Shakshuka and huevos rancheros at BakaBaka, some of the most popular dishes

BakaBaka's Shakshuka is pictured in the foreground, and their Huevos Rancheros are in the background.

We started with a warm cup of caramel latte and a glass of apple juice that was crisp, cold, and refreshing.

For mains, we ordered:

  • Shakshuka: Deeply seasoned with a warm blend of spices and topped with a perfectly poached egg. It was served with slices of grilled, buttered sourdough that were smoky and chewy—delicious enough to eat on their own.

  • Huevos Rancheros: A balanced, flavorful dish with a zesty tomato base and just the right amount of spice. The egg was perfectly runny, and the meal felt comforting without being too heavy.

Every bite tasted fresh and was made with intention. Nothing was overdone—just simple, satisfying food that hit the spot. The way everything was plated felt warm and homey, like the space itself.

If you’re grabbing breakfast, meeting friends for brunch, or sitting down for a casual pizza dinner, BakaBaka is the kind of place that gets it right any time of day.
