The Story of Icelanders is a free interactive history show at Laugavegur 56 in downtown Reykjavik, open daily from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. In just 11 minutes, short films screened across a series of themed rooms carry you from the Viking settlement to the Iceland of today.
The show shares its space with the Guide to Iceland Tourist Information Center and the Made in Iceland Souvenir Shop, so you can watch the show, pick up keepsakes under one roof, get travel advice, and book tours in Iceland.
The Story of Icelanders is part of Guide to Iceland's VIP Club, and VIP Club members get 10% off all souvenirs at Made in Iceland Souvenirs.
A Free 11-Minute Journey Through Icelandic History
The Story of Icelanders Show runs 11 minutes from start to finish. There's no ticket required, making it one of the few completely free things to do in Reykjavik. Films play in different rooms and settings, each one staging its own chapter of the country's story rather than a single screening hall.
Each themed room also doubles as a photo op, where you can put on a Viking helmet, pick up a shield and axe, and pose for photos as you go.
The films cover the Norse settlement of the 870s, the defining turns of Icelandic history, and the nation's long push for gender equality. The show is presented in English only.
Location and Opening Hours on Laugavegur
The Story of Icelanders sits at Laugavegur 56, 101 Reykjavik, Iceland, on the main shopping street that runs through the heart of Reykjavik. Doors are open daily from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, so the show fits easily before dining in one of the capital's breakfast spots or after enjoying day tours in and around Reykjavik.
Families visiting Iceland with kids are welcome, but a few scenes use jump scares and strobing light effects, so parents of easily startled kids and visitors sensitive to flashing lights should plan accordingly.
Tourist Information and Icelandic-Made Souvenirs Under One Roof
The same space houses the Guide to Iceland Tourist Information Center, where visitors can ask questions about traveling in the country and book tours and activities across Iceland.
Made in Iceland Souvenirs, also on site, stocks products made only in Iceland, so every keepsake you carry home is authentic. VIP Club members receive a 10% discount on all Icelandic souvenirs in the shop.
