Description

Experience the wonders of North Iceland on this thrilling private tour. This 8-hour adventure takes cruise ship passengers to Godafoss waterfall, the Lake Myvatn area, and its many surrounding attractions before relaxing in the Myvatn Nature Baths.

The action begins in the morning when an experienced guide picks you up from the Akureyri port, where your cruise ship is docked. You'll then ride a comfortable minibus, which will be your mode of transportation around North Iceland.

Your first destination will be the majestic Godafoss waterfall, one of Iceland's most iconic natural attractions. But before you reach the waterfall, you'll pass through the beautiful Eyjafjordur fjord. One of Iceland's longest fjords, Eyjafjordur stretches about 43 miles (70 kilometers) from the Arctic Circle to Akureyri. Surrounded by mountains and charming fishing villages, Eyjafjordur blends natural beauty and cultural richness.

Upon arriving at Godafoss waterfall, its breathtaking view led by its curtain of mist will welcome you. If you visit on a sunny day, you'll likely see a rainbow amidst the mist. Godafoss waterfall spans 30 meters wide and drops about 12 meters, creating a powerful, semicircular cascade that's a sight to behold.

When it comes to historical significance, Godafoss waterfall is steeped in legend. According to the sagas, in the year 1000 AD, the Lawspeaker Thorgeir Ljosvetningagodi made the momentous decision to adopt Christianity as the official religion of Iceland. To symbolize this pivotal change, he cast his pagan idols into the waterfall, giving it the name "Waterfall of the Gods."

After taking pictures in the area, your guide will take you to your next stop: Lake Myvatn. Known for its stunning landscapes, unique geological formations, and abundant birdlife, the Lake Myvatn area spans about 14 square miles (37 square kilometers).

One of the many wonders you'll visit in the area is Skutustadagigar, a stunning row of pseudocraters. These formations, created by steam explosions rather than typical volcanic activity, were formed around 2,300 years ago. There are man-made and natural walking paths that will let you explore the craters up close.

Next, you'll head to Dimmuborgir, another geological wonder worth visiting. Dimmuborgir's name translates to "Dark Castles," perfectly describing its landscape of towering, jagged structures. Like in Skutustadagigar, Dimmuborgir has walking paths to help you explore this geological wonder and find the ideal spots for great photos.

Your next destination is the Grjotagja cave, known for its geothermal hot springs and concealed dramatic beauty. Historically, Grjotagja cave was a popular bathing spot for locals. Today, the pool is no longer safe for bathing because of the temperature's unpredictability.

However, the cave remains a must-visit for travelers. Because of its crystal-clear waters,  rugged lava rock, and the vibrant, and peaceful atmosphere, the Grjotagja cave became famous for being a filming location for the hit HBO series "Game of Thrones."

Your guide will then take you to the Hverir geothermal area. Known for its numerous boiling mud pots, steaming fumaroles, and sulfurous vents, the Hverir geothermal area offers a unique visual experience for visitors. As you explore the area, you'll see vivid colors, from the rich reds and oranges of the iron-rich soil to the white and yellow sulfur deposits.

To cap off your thrilling day in North Iceland, you'll relax and unwind at the Myvatn Nature Baths. Considered the "Blue Lagoon of the North," the Myvatn Nature Baths feature mineral-rich, geothermally heated waters believed to help various skin conditions and boost overall well-being.

If there's more time left, your guide can take you back to Eyjafjordur to take more photos before returning to the Akureyri port.

Don't miss this chance to experience the beauty of North Iceland during your cruise on this private 8-hour Godafoss waterfall, Lake Myvatn, and Myvatn Nature Baths tour. Check availability now by choosing a date.
