If you are looking for a perfect winter tour, you have found it! In this tour you can enjoy a combination of a glacier hiking and in the winter very popular ice caving. But don't worry, this is not the ordinary crowded bus tour.

The tour departs Skaftafell Terminal Tour Centre. Here you will meet your guide and be briefed on safety and what to expect. You will also get all the gear necessary for hiking on the ice - crampons, harness, ice axe and helmet. After that, you will jump into our modified 4x4 Land Rover Defender truck which will take you towards the glacier.

On the way, you can enjoy the view of a breathtaking landscape where movies like 'Batman Begins,' 'Interstellar,' and the incredibly popular HBO series 'Game of Thrones' were set. On the way to the glacier, you will hike yourself you will see three other outlet glaciers - Skeiðarárjökull, Skaftafellsjökull and Svínafellsjökull. All these are part of Vatnajökull, which is the biggest glacier in Iceland, Europe and the 3rd biggest glacier in the world.

To get to the foot of the glacier, we will drive you over the rocky moraine hills through rugged terrain that was formed by the glacier. Once you make it to the edge of the glacier, you will get instruction on how to put on crampons and use the rest of the provided gear. You will also get a full safety briefing from your licenced glacier guide.

Now you are ready to start exploring! Depending on where on the glacier the ice cave will be located this season (it changes every year) you will either begin with hiking the glacier or by visiting the cave itself. In the ice cave, we will spend between 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the weather and light conditions and the number of people on the glacier that day. Ice caves are a natural phenomenon and change every year, sometimes even every week. They are only accessible for a few months over the winter, which makes them very popular among visitors. We always try our best to enjoy them alone and spend as much time as possible, exploring and taking photos inside. After visiting the ice cave, you will hike through crevasses, peak into moulins and enjoy other formations on the glacier. While walking, you will always see a giant wall of ice with icy towers from which some are up to 20 meters tall. During the hike, your guide will explain all about how glacier and blue ice caves are created to tell you more about the history of Skaftafell and also share more about the wildlife in the area.

On this tour you will spend minimum two up to 2,5 hours on the ice itself, so you will have plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful views and take enough photos to bring this experience back home with you.
