50 Minute Sightseeing Flight over Laki Craters, Glaciers & Highlands from Skaftafell
Description
Summary
Description
Join this exciting scenic flight for panoramic vistas over glaciers, lakes and volcanic craters in the Icelandic highlands! You will fly to the west of Vatnajökull National Park, over the large and ashy Skeiðarárjökull glacier and some glacier lakes. Then you'll continue west over Síðujökull glacier and finally fly over the beautiful area of Lakagígar craters.
Vatnajökull National Park was established in 2008 and includes some of the most recognizable attractions, such as Skaftafell Nature Reserve. Beside Skaftafell is the Skaftafellsjökul glacier, which looks like a carpet of ice tumbling down between the mountains on its way to the sea.
Lakagígar, or Laki Craters, is a 27 km long eruptive fissure consisting of 130 giant craters. The Lakagígar craters were formed by a volcanic eruption in 1783 and are the largest discharge caused by volcanic activity ever to have been witnessed. It changed the landscape forever, like a battleground between the shifting, roiling pressures of the earth.
On your return, you'll fly over Súlutindar, a formation shaped by the glacier on the west side of Skeiðarárjökull glacier and then continue southeast along the edge of the glacier where you will get a panoramic view of its massive size. Súlutindar is a desolate landscape of grasslands, mostly uninhabited, and it's so easy to imagine a Viking in the Saga Age crossing the land with only an Icelandic horse as a companion.
Langisjór is a lake in the highlands, on the southwestern border of Vatnajökull glacier. It is one of the most remote in Iceland; in fact, no roads lead there, so this is one of the best ways to see it!
Come aboard and see some of the most isolated, faraway spots in Iceland from a birds-eye view. It is unforgettable! Check availability by choosing a date.
